Parameters that need to be understood when purchasing a cooling fan

If I were to ask you, among all the accessories of a device, what is the essential but also the least eye-catching and least easily noticed accessory? You wouldn’t think that what is really easily overlooked is the cooling fan. The impact of a cooling fan on the overall equipment is significant. A low-quality cooling fan may not only cause your equipment system to burn down due to high temperature, but also emit noise that will gradually weaken your spirit. Some people may think that cooling fans are low-tech products, but in fact, a high-quality cooling fan can contain many advanced technologies. A good cooling fan should silently provide a cool working environment for your device system.

The cooling fan has become an essential accessory for equipment hosts (including computer peripherals, household appliances, audio amplifier systems, car refrigerators, on-board equipment, instruments, mechanical equipment, etc.).

To understand the cooling fan used by the system equipment, one must first understand several main parameters of the cooling fan. Fans produced by legitimate cooling fan manufacturers generally have the specifications and parameters of the product on the back of the packaging. Here is a brief introduction to the general parameters of the cooling fan.

The first is the size of the cooling fan, which mainly indicates the size of the fan, usually in millimeters.

The second is the size of the heat sink, which is written as the volume of the heat sink and is not related to the heat sink fan we introduced here.

The third is the rated voltage, which is the voltage index of the cooling fan under stable operation. The common DC cooling fan voltage in the market is generally 12V.

The fourth is the fan speed, measured in rpm (revolutions per minute), which is an important parameter for cooling fans. A high speed indicates that it can bring in high air volume.

The fifth is the air volume, which is the most intuitive and important indicator for measuring the capacity of a cooling fan, measured in CFM and labeled as cubic feet per minute.

The sixth is noise, which is another important index that everyone is concerned about. Although it is not related to fan heat dissipation, it also affects users’ choices, in dBA (decibels).

The seventh is the bearing, which is the soul component of the cooling fan and determines the overall performance of the cooling fan.

The eighth is the service life, which literally means that there is nothing too profound.

The ninth is the fan connector, which is an important detail component on the fan and is easily overlooked by everyone.

The tenth is the working voltage range, which refers to the voltage range within which the cooling fan can operate normally. It is generally related to DIY’s self-made cooling fan governor.

The voltage adjusted by the governor needs to be within the specified range for the cooling fan to rotate normally.

The above are some basic parameters that need to be understood about a cooling fan, providing us with basic reference guidance when selecting a cooling fan for equipment systems.
